Why I Stopped Relying on Serums: The Rise of "Inside-Out" Skin Longevity

Let’s have an honest conversation about your skincare routine. If you look in your bathroom cabinet right now, how many bottles are sitting there? Serums, exfoliating acids, barrier repair creams, overnight masks... we’ve all been conditioned to believe that the secret to aging gracefully comes in a $150 glass dropper. As a licensed esthetician, I’ve spent my career perfecting topical treatments. And don’t get me wrong, what we do on the surface absolutely matters. But over the last year, I’ve had a major realization that has completely shifted the way I treat my clients: You cannot out-moisturize internal inflammation. You cannot out-exfoliate a nutrient deficiency. Welcome to the era of Skin Longevity , where the most profound beauty transformations happen at the cellular level. Today, we are talking about the "Inside-Out" approach to skincare, why your gut is secretly running the show, and how to build a routine that actually lasts. 🧬 The "Inside-Out" Philosophy...

Beyond the Surface: Resilience, Healing, and Finding Strength in the Stumble

There is a quiet rhythm to the work of an aesthetician. Day after day, we focus on restoration—smoothing fine lines, soothing inflammation, and caring for the canvas people present to the world. We treat the surface, but anyone in this field knows skin deep is just the beginning. Real transformation happens from the inside out. I learned that truth not through a textbook or a certification, but through my own body. Over the past few years, life required me to stop simply practicing restoration and actually live it. The Battle You Don't Plan For When I received my breast cancer diagnosis, the world slowed to a stark, terrifying crawl. Cancer strip away control; it demands everything you have and offers zero guarantees in return. In the middle of treatments, surgeries, and endless uncertainty, my identity as a caregiver and skin health expert felt distant. I was no longer the one bringing comfort—I was the one fighting to survive. Surviving cancer changes your baseline. It leaves phy...

Back to School and Staying Healthy

Back to School: Staying Healthy in the Classroom and Beyond The start of the school year is an exciting time for kids and parents alike. But it can also be a time when germs are easily spread, especially in close quarters like classrooms and school buses. Here are some tips for staying healthy during the back-to-school season: Wash your hands often.  This is the single most important thing you can do to prevent the spread of germs. Be sure to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, especially after using the bathroom, before eating, and after being around someone who is sick.

Oncology Skincare and Maria's Gift from GlyMed Plus

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. Aside from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women today. Today, when you look around, you will see the unique things people are doing to help promote awareness of this disease and the efforts to find a cure. You cannot help be touched by all the different ways professional athletes and coaches are showing their support. From pink shoes, pink sweatbands, and pink ribbon stickers on helmets, it is great to see then all get involved. If you or someone you know is undergoing treatments, GlyMed Plus, the skincare line that I use and carry in my studio, has a program called "Maria's Gift".  Maria's Gift helps breast cancer survivors by donating GlyMed Plus professional pr...

New Year to a 2020 Vision

With only a few days of 2019, 2020 will be the year of vision. As we look back on all we have accomplished in the past year, we can't help but wonder what has happened to those New Year's resolutions we made! Some we kept, some forgotten, and some were never met, but nonetheless, it has been a great year. Tell me, what is your resolution? Since this year is the year of vision, my resolution is to be prosperous and bright in all my endeavors. To achieve the goals that are made and make new ones for the ones that have been met, keeping a vision for the future of where I want to go.

Role Models

November is National Inspirational Role Models Month . No matter your age, gender, or stage in file, having someone who inspires you to be the best version of yourself is always a positive thing. Perhaps it is a friend, a celebrity or an activist. Whether the person is high-profile or not isn’t important. Their character and ability to inspire, guide, and teach carries much more value. This month let’s focus on the person who motivates you and thank them for their leadership. I would like you to share who inspires you? I’ve mentioned some of the characteristics of a role model, but let’s go into more detail. A  role model  is a person other people look up to in order to help determine appropriate behaviors.  Role models  can be either positive or negative. ... Virtually anyone can be a  role model , but in Western culture, publicly visible figures such as athletes, actors, musicians, and celebrities are the most common  examples , which are not always...

Pre-Wedding Tips

To all the beautiful newly engaged brides-to-be, congratulations on your engagement. It doesn't matter what wedding magazine or website you look at, they are telling you similar things to get the best wedding day look. My experience in the industry of makeup, in addition to being a Minnesota License Advanced Esthetician, I would like to share with you what routine is best to do to get the best looking skin, all leading up to your big wedding day.

Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a precise and highly effective superficial exfoliation. It relies on the simplest of tools but the most artful of skill to deeply scrape and exfoliate away the top layers of inert skin. This low-tech treatment yields the highest dividends in skin toning, clarifying and re-texturizing and is ideally suited for all ages and skin types. Dermaplaning also removes hair from the treated areas leaving behind a smooth, beautiful face free from embarrassing and unwanted hair. Dermaplaning does not remove the root of facial hair, but instead removes the hair that sits above the epidermis. Dermaplaning is designed to work effectively with the vellus hairs found on your face and hair does not appear thicker or darker as it grows back in.

In Depth Look at Volume Lashes

When getting, a classic lash set a 0.15 or 0.20 lash is applied to 1 natural lash.  The Volume technique is a pristine method in which you are SAFELY applying anywhere from 2-6 super fine ( 0.05 to 0.10) , lightweight extensions per natural lash.   The lashes are applied in a fan shape to 1 natural lash.   The Volume technique is a pristine method in which you are SAFELY applying anywhere from 2-6 super fine, lightweight extensions per natural lash. Many who have heard about the new volume technique have various questions like is it safe for the natural lashes? Is it too heavy? Will it damage the natural lashes? With the Volume technique, you can apply more lashes, using less weight. This allows you to create fuller more lush lashes. Especially for those who do not have many natural lashes. Volume lashing is indeed a technique. It is not a type of lash. You are using certain diameters for the volume technique. But it's all about how you apply them. With volume, you...

The Difference Between a Classic Set of Lashes and a Volume Set of Lashes (Part 2)

VOLUME There’s a new technique taking over the lashing world right now, it is known as Volume Lash Extensions. What is it? Well, it is when multiple lash extensions are applied to one single natural eyelash individually isolating one natural eyelash at a time. Using very thin lashes. If two eyelash extensions are applied to one natural lash it’s described as 2D , if three eyelash extensions are applied to one natural eyelash then it’s described as 3D etc.

The Difference Between a Classic Set of Lashes and a Volume Set of Lashes (Part 1)

CLASSIC A classic set of lashes, aka Individual Eyelash Extensions, have been around for many years now. But what exactly is a Classic Set of Lashes? Classic lashing is the art of skillfully applying one single synthetic eyelash extension, to one isolated natural lash. This method is also known as 1 to 1 or 1:1. We do this again and again until we have placed an extension on every single natural lash we see!

Best Makeup for Lash Extensions

The good news: Your eyelash extensions look fabulous. A common question for people considering eyelash extensions ask, “Can I wear makeup with them?”. The answer is thankfully “Yes!”. The bad news is half your eye-makeup collection needs to go. Eyelash extensions can last for up to six weeks, but wearing the wrong makeup can lead to lash fallout and extension damage, dramatically decreasing the length of time your lash extensions look full and fabulous. For a lot of women, eyelash extension alone make them look feminine, awake, and put together. Many women feel comfortable wearing only eyelash extensions! However, this is not always the case for everyone. Eyelash extensions aren’t going to fix acne, scarring, discoloration, dark circles, or other skin concerns. And even with the pretty and sometimes dramatic statement of lashes you will still want some pretty shading and definition on your eyes. That’s great! Here are some tips and ideas for showcasing and pre...

Longer Wear for Your Lash Extensions

Eyelash extensions are a commitment, even if you plan to only get them once for a special event or occasion. You pay a good amount of money, lay in a chair for more than an hour and walk out looking like the prettiest version of yourself. Whether you plan to come back in a 2-3-weeks for a fill or not, you want to keep those lashes looking beautiful, natural and healthy. Even the best eyelash extensions can be short lived and even destructive to your natural lashes if you aren’t taking care of them. The good news is that taking good care of your eyelash extensions is very easy – and rewarding. By taking care of your extensions you can make them last longer, look prettier, and protect the growth of your natural eyelashes.

Can Eyelash Extensions Be Addicting?

As you can see from last week's blog, lash extensions have many advantages. Unfortunately, there is also one big disadvantage that you should consider. Eyelash extensions are the ultimate accessory for any glamour-loving gal; and once you’ve had yours done by a good lash artist, you’ll understand why they deserve to be part of your beauty regime. Long, luxurious lash extensions are fast approaching to be the new manicure/pedicure, another by-appointment step in our high-maintenance beauty ritual of cuts, colors, brows, and Brazilians. And once you start, you won’t ever want to stop! A woman should never apologize for two things: looking fabulous, and feeling confident. So, when full, flirty eyelash extensions give you a boost in appearance and esteem, you should revel in it, rather than entertain the notion that you may have a problem. In fact, you might have problems, but flimsy lashes are not one of them!
