Aging and Free Radicals

Men and Women....How to protect your skin from the elements.

Today, we hear so much about the negative effects that sun and free radicals can hurt both our skin and our bodies. A recent study showed that polluted areas are less hydrated, oxygenated, and shed dead cells less efficiently, and is depleted of skin-saving antioxidants like Vitamin E.

Don’t assume just because you live in the country or suburbs, that you are protected from these free radicals. Pollutants such as ozone and nitrogen are carried in all direction by the wind, but here is how you create a shield to defend these free radicals and aging process.

1.       Cleanse, do not strip the skin.
The problem with most cleansers is they may get rid of the surface pollutants, but they can also strip the skin of natural oils. Ask your esthetician and find a cleanser that will take care of the daily grime and fight skin dryness and preserve skin nutrients.

2.       Speed up cell turnover.
With skin polluted areas, shedding dead cells is less efficient. Use an exfoliated scrub is essential. Just do not overdo it; too much scrubbing will leave you vulnerable to the elements, and can case breakouts and scaring. Apply twice weekly using gentle, circular motions – and always avoid the delicate eye area.

3.       Factor up
According to preliminary research presented to the American Academy of Dermatology last year, pollution may also aggravate damage caused by the sun’s UV rays. The solution is to use a daily moisturizer with sunscreen.

4.       Up your antioxidants.
Pollution causes significant modification in the lipids and proteins on the skin’s surface, and antioxidant defenses diminish. Consider protecting the skin 24/7 with an antioxidant supplement or up your vitamin E intake – nuts and seeds are great sources.

5.       Invest in an ionizer
If you live in the city, pollution is not just outside your house, it is everywhere. Cleanse your house’s air of pollutants that may irritate your skin with an air purifier. Now….breathe easier.

Even though you will be taking all these precautions, that does not mean you will not still have some effects of aging happen, it is all part of live, but you can slow the process down.

Role Models

November is National Inspirational Role Models Month . No matter your age, gender, or stage in file, having someone who inspires you to be the best version of yourself is always a positive thing. Perhaps it is a friend, a celebrity or an activist. Whether the person is high-profile or not isn’t important. Their character and ability to inspire, guide, and teach carries much more value. This month let’s focus on the person who motivates you and thank them for their leadership. I would like you to share who inspires you? I’ve mentioned some of the characteristics of a role model, but let’s go into more detail. A  role model  is a person other people look up to in order to help determine appropriate behaviors.  Role models  can be either positive or negative. ...
